Double podium for Edward in Spain

A fine performance from Edward Pearson on his second weekend in the Euroformula Open Championship resulted in further silverware as the series headed to Catalunya.

The British teenager had scored a podium on his first weekend in the series with leading outfit Motopark, with Edward showing impressive pace in tricky conditions at the Red Bull Ring.

As on his series debut in Austria, Edward was appearing at the home of the Spanish Grand Prix for the first time but made good use of pre-event testing and free practice to gain plenty of knowledge at the wheel of his Dallara F320 despite feeling under the weather.

That was reflected in qualifying, where he bettered his earlier lap times to earn a place on the second row of the grid, setting a best time just over four-tenths of a second off pole.

Holding on to third place at the start of the opening race, Edward was able to retain his position throughout the 17 lap encounter to bring his car safely to the flag and secure the final step of the podium.

Lining up in fourth place on the grid for race two, Edward briefly slipped a place at the start but a fine move at the end of the lap saw him move ahead of Vladislav Ryabov into fourth.

The battle with his new Motopark team-mate had allowed the top three to break away but Edward showed his pace as he closed in on points leader Brad Benavides before finishing in fourth.

Once again starting from fourth for the final race of the weekend, Edward grabbed third on the run to turn one before going wheel-to-wheel with Benavides, with the American running off track as the pair fought for position.

Chasing down the lead pair, Edward made a stunning move around the outside of Fernando Barrichello at turn five to grab second and fought hard to try and get ahead of Ryabov before being forced to settle for second having set the fastest lap of the race.

It leaves Edward with a record of three podium finishes from six starts since the decision to move over from the GB3 Championship, providing plenty of food for thought looking ahead to the 2025 season.

“I’m delighted with my second weekend in Euroformula Open, and to come away with two podium finishes from three races is really pleasing,” he said. “I was particularly happy with race three after my move to get up to second, as well as the fact I set the fastest lap. I have to thank everyone at Motopark for their help over the past two weekends.

“They have provided me with a fantastic car and I can’t wait to see what is to come in the future together.”
